History

South West Garo Hills was established as a district of Meghalaya on 7th August 2012. In its initial years, judicial functions within the district were carried out by the Executive.

A significant milestone in the district’s judicial history was achieved on 24th February 2017, when the Court of the District and Sessions Judge was formally established. The inauguration ceremony was graced by esteemed dignitaries, including the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Dr. Mukul Sangma, and the Hon’ble Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya, Justice Dinesh Maheshwari, along with other respected members of the judiciary and government.

On the same day, the foundation stone for the District and Sessions Court building was laid. A Lok Adalat was also conducted, symbolically marking the separation of the judiciary from the executive in the district—an important step toward strengthening judicial independence and accessibility.

Following its establishment, the office of the District and Sessions Judge initially functioned from the New Court Building. Subsequently, on 10th December 2022, the court operations were shifted to a newly constructed independent building, providing improved infrastructure and facilities for the administration of justice.

Today, the District & Sessions Court of South West Garo Hills stands as a cornerstone of the district’s legal system, committed to delivering fair, efficient, and accessible justice to all.
